What is the Kundalini Yoga: Poses, Benefits?

Many People practice yoga for physical exercise to maintain his health. Kundalini Yoga is for spiritual practice. It is meant to clam your mind also, at the same time, opening your chakras so your energy can freely flow throughout your body.

Kundalini yoga was brought to a western audience in 1968 when Yogi Bhajan began teaching in California. He founded 3HO (the Healthy, Happy, Holy Organization) in 1969 to introduce Kundalini yoga to a broader population.

Kundalini yoga is the combination of physical movements(Poses), breathing exercises, meditation, and chanting. Through regular practice your body become stronger and you feel more energized while increasing your self-awareness and consciousness.

Kundalini Yoga helps you open your inner strength and energy, making you stronger physically and more aware of toward yourself and the world. It’s like a journey to your Inner self.

In this practice, we talk about something called Kundalini, which is like hidden energy coiled at the bottom of your spine. Think of it power source within you. With Kundalini Yoga, you learn to awaken this energy and make it flow up through your body, kind of like turning on a light switch for each of your body’s energy centers, called chakras. When this energy reaches the top of your head, it’s like reaching the highest level of understanding and awareness.

Kundalini poses for beginners

If you’d like to try Kundalini yoga, you may want to start with these beginner-friendly poses.

Lotus pose

Lotus pose

Lotus is a basic seated pose. It helps open your hips, so it might feel difficult if you have tightness in this area. Move slowly and avoid the posture if you have hip problems.

To do lotus pose:

  1. Sit on the floor with your legs extended. Maintain a neutral spine.
  2. Bend your knees outward, bringing your feet toward your body as if you were about to sit in a cross-legged position.
  3. Place your left foot on top of your right thigh. Then, place your right foot on top of your left thigh.
  4. Inhale and exhale deeply while in Lotus, unless your instructor has you do pranayama.

Cobra pose

Cobra pose

This pose is said to activate your Kundalini energy. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Lie down on your stomach, with your legs and feet pressed together. Rest the tops of your feet against the floor.
  2. Plant your palms beneath your shoulders. Make sure your fingers are pointing forward and your elbows are parallel to each other.
  3. Inhale. Raise your head and torso, pressing your lower body into the floor.
  4. Straighten your arms, lifting your chest and stomach. Bring your shoulders down and back.
  5. Hold Cobra for up to 30 seconds, breathing deeply. Exhale and return to the starting position.

Archer pose

Archer is thought to make you feel confident, like a warrior. To do this pose:

  1. Stand up straight, with your feet together. Rotate your right foot outward, about 45 degrees.
  2. Step your right foot back, straightening your leg. Bend your left knee, but make sure it doesn’t go past your left foot.
  3. Extend your arms to shoulder height. Curl both hands into fists and point your thumbs up.
  4. Rotate your upper body to the left. Simultaneously bend your right elbow and bring your right fist toward your right armpit.
  5. Look forward and breathe deeply while you hold this position for 2 to 3 minutes.
  6. Then switch sides, with your left leg back and your left arm bent, and hold for another 2 to 3 minutes while breathing deeply.

Is Kundalini yoga safe?

Kundalini yoga, like all yoga, should be practiced with safety in mind.

Use caution if you:

  • have breathing issues
  • have joint pain
  • have an injury
  • have balance problems
  • are pregnant
